Travelling back and forth in time between Bible Studies: information and formation
Before Christian Reformation, there was a lack of an analytical way of studying the Bible, the inductive study “Observation, Interpretation, Application” is an appropriate approach to develop an analytical way of studying the Bible. In the
most recent decades, education has been common to all up to secondary/high
school level, in which graduates were capable to comprehend a piece of writing
analytically for information extraction and knowledge acquiring. However, the
schooling we received has been training students more on information acquiring
from reading, which is necessary and crucial in terms of skills preparation
before entering the workforce, lesser on being formative. Therefore, in terms
of Bible Study, besides having the inductive study, we may need to revisit
older ways of studying the Bible such as Lectio/Visio Divina and Gospel
contemplation before the Reformation era (e.g. prior to 15th Century)
to achieve a balance or enable us to juggle coherently between knowledge
acquiring (information) and heart changing (formation/transformation).
